You hear a lot these days about the health benefits of physical activity. So why are there so many people who don't get enough exercise? For some, it's simply a question of finding the time, energy, and an activity they enjoy. Of course, before starting any exercise plan, be sure to discuss it with your doctor.
Fitting in a little time for fitness.
Take a look at your average week. Try to spot a few openings where a half hour of exercise makes sense. Or think about making small changes to your routine so you can fit a little fitness time in. Why not try stretching while the TV is on? Or taking fitness breaks instead of coffee breaks?
Exercise when your energy is high.
Do you feel more energetic in the morning or afternoon? Before meals or an hour or two later? Try to keep your exercise schedule in synch with times when your energy level is high.
Find activities that are physical and fun.
Physical activity comes in many forms. So find one you like. If swimming or biking isn't your thing, you might want to get outside and garden. Or play fetch with your dog. Even a night of dancing or a day running around with the kids could be energy well spent.
Haven't been active for a while?
It's okay to go slowly at first. Start exercising in moderation and work your way up. But do it gradually. As you start feeling more comfortable, try building up to 30 minutes or more of moderate-intensity activity.
