Leslie's Story

When her symptoms didn't improve, Leslie needed more than an antacid.

The people in these stories are not actual patients. These scenarios represent just a few of the many stories PROTONIX patients may share.

A few antacids. Or a few too many?

For almost two years, 55-year-old Leslie had a roll of antacids on her nightstand. And in her car. And in her purse. In fact, Leslie had a roll of antacids with her at all times. And she was popping them in her mouth like candy throughout the day and before bedtime.

To Leslie, her symptoms didn't seem like a big deal, just a burning feeling in her chest. She thought it was only a little heartburn.

There was only one problem. Leslie's symptoms never seemed to go away. Every day, she was taking more and more antacids. And sometimes at night, her symptoms kept her up. So she made an appointment with her doctor.

More than just heartburn.

After talking to Leslie about her symptoms and giving her an examination, including an endoscopy, her doctor told her that she had erosive acid reflux disease. He explained that the acid backing up into her esophagus was actually causing sores or erosions. The antacids Leslie was taking were only neutralizing the acid temporarily, which may be why her symptoms were starting to keep her up at night.

One pill, once a day.

Leslie's doctor prescribed PROTONIX, a medication that shuts down many of the acid-producing pumps in the stomach. Now, instead of taking antacids, Leslie takes one PROTONIX 40 mg tablet in the morning and gets the healing and symptom relief she's been looking for at night. Individual results may vary.
